The drawing-like hand shape has been placed on the top of a building. The building stands between rows of poplars. Two gaps in each row face each other. They make us image the direction of the wind. The building is in the way and hand placed to block the wind. However the hand only has outlines, as a metaphor. It stands in the wind, although it will never catch the wind.
Noriko Mitsuhashi focuses on human relationships. Distance is an important element in her work. Her home town Sapporo and her current residency Rotterdam belong to the same climatic zone. The landscape with poplars reminds her of her home town. In some ways Rotterdam is closer to Sapporo then other parts of Japan. This idea is integral to the project she plans at Kaus Australis, of which Catch the Wind is the first part.
